Does a water filter remove lead?

Short answer

Only filters certified to NSF/ANSI Standard 53 for lead reduction are tested for that claim. Check the package and NSF's listings for 'lead' specifically, follow cartridge replacement dates, and note that boiling water does not remove lead (Denver Water says so directly).

Frequently asked questions

How can I tell if my water pipe is lead?

Find where the water line enters your home, usually near the meter. Lightly scratch it with a coin or key. Lead is soft, dull gray, scratches to shiny silver, and a magnet will not stick. Galvanized steel attracts a magnet. Copper scratches to a penny color. Confirm with your utility.
