What does 'unknown' mean on my utility's service line inventory?
Short answer
'Unknown' means the utility does not yet have records showing what your line is made of. Many utilities ask owners to help: Columbus and Cleveland both take photo submissions. Reporting your pipe can move you out of 'unknown' and into the right replacement group.

Frequently asked questions
How can I tell if my water pipe is lead?
Find where the water line enters your home, usually near the meter. Lightly scratch it with a coin or key. Lead is soft, dull gray, scratches to shiny silver, and a magnet will not stick. Galvanized steel attracts a magnet. Copper scratches to a penny color. Confirm with your utility.
